Job Description

Hello!
We are _SocialStarters and we design the spaces and opportunities to nurture and ignite the social changer in you.

We currently take career changers and career breakers, post-grads and sabbaticalists, corporate learners and freelancers to amazing places, to work alongside grassroots social entrepreneurs, social changers and NGOs. We are looking for volunteers who can use their skills and experience to create change.

Join us in February & April 2016 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

We invite you to collaborate, learn & design with social entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka in Feb & April 2016!

We are recruiting volunteer ‘Social Impact Consultants’, who we will train to support grassroots social entrepreneurs, in partnership with the British Council, Social Enterprise Lanka and Colombo’s Good Market. As well as gaining hands on experience in the world of social enterprise overseas there will also be the opportunity to focus on your learning and development, an important part of your volunteer journey.

Who are we?
We are a small group of young professionals who have been making our move away from the corporate sector in the last few years. Since then we’ve been notching up hours in volunteer management, international development, youth media, CSR & social enterprise. Between us we have over 30 years of professional experience, and recently we’ve been running enterprise and social action youth programmes, managing over 200 volunteers along the way.

Who are you?
You feel it’s time to share your skills and experience to make an impact in the world

Or perhaps you want to immerse yourself into another culture, meet like minded people and take on a new challenge

Maybe, you’ve left your job or are thinking of leaving and want to explore different opportunities

You’re looking to travel with purpose

You want to gain new skills or work on your own personal development

You want to make a change in your life and are looking for an experience that might spark a shift in your life, but you don’t know where to start

Who will you be working with?
Your clients will be a small group of grassroots Sri Lankan social entrepreneurs who are making a huge difference in their communities tackling core social and environmental issues.

We are currently developing our partnership with The British Council, Social Enterprise Lanka and Good Market – an exciting community hub in Colombo who specialise in providing a space for socially impactful and eco-friendly products. Having engaged with around 100 vendors they educate people about organic, fair trade, plastics and food addititives and are a key part of the SE community in SL.

You’ll get to work with start-ups who are at the early stages of their start-up journey (approx. 1-3 years).

What happens on the programme?
Firstly using your profiles, the client’s needs assessments and information from our partner, we match you with a client who needs the skills and experience that you have

You then take part in Training Week which equips you with the essentials you need to know about global and Sri Lankan social entrepreneurship, basic consultancy tools and techniques, and an introduction to start up methods. The aim is to enable you to support you client appropriately over the forthcoming 5 weeks

We then put you into pairs with the client you have both been matched with

You will conduct your own needs assessment to determine what can be achieved in the following 5 weeks

You’ll pick a project to work on, focusing on the key objectives that you decide on with your client

You will then spend the remaining weeks identifying problems, sharing knowledge, designing solutions, testing ideas or building brands making a long lasting impact for your client

After Training Week the learning doesn’t stop either – we provide additional sessions through workshops to give you a deeper dive into some of the methods we introduce, affording you better knowledge in key areas

We also provide 1:1 sessions and additional workshops to guide you through your own personal development journey

If you have a project or business idea you want to explore in your spare time this is also encouraged and you can rally support from your peer group!

Former Sri Lanka Consultants say:
“I had a great experience with my clients and feel the partnerships with the British Council and The Good Market can offer a lot. I learnt technical and softer skills from both clients and fellow consultants and came away from the programme with a clearer vision of my future career(s).”
Sunil Makwana, former finance professional, Nomura, UK.

“A truly unique opportunity to advise social enterprise leaders who are eager to implement your fresh business recommendations, while at the same time, to benefit firsthand from their own lessons learned and innovative successes.”
