Advance Peace reduces gun violence in U.S. urban neighborhoods by providing transformational opportunities to young men involved in lethal firearm offenses and placing them in a high-touch, personalized fellowship. By working with and supporting a targeted group of individuals at the core of gun hostilities, Advance Peace bridges the gap between anti-violence programming and a hard-to-reach population in urban areas, thus breaking the cycle of gun violence and altering the trajectory of these men’s lives.
Advance Peace is a start-up social enterprise founded in 2016 by DeVone Boggan, founding Director of Richmond’s Office of Neighborhood Safety (ONS). DeVone’s work at ONS has been featured in reporting by CNN, The New York Times, and NPR. Advance Peace’s seed funders include The Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation and The California Endowment.

Position Summary:
Advance Peace (AP) seeks a mission-driven, resourceful, high-achieving, and entrepreneurial individual as its Director of Operations. The Director of Operations will ensure that AP has the internal organizational processes and infrastructure it needs to advance its mission. The Director of Operations will be a strong partner to the CEO, complementing the CEO’s focus on leadership, fundraising, and program implementation. He/she will work directly with AP’s CEO to build AP at its start-up stage, manage partnerships and stakeholder groups (including AP’s board and funders), craft and implement Advance Peace’s strategic plan, and execute special projects as needed. This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-paced, high-impact start-up nonprofit looking to transform the criminal justice field. This role is highly strategic and facilitative, one that requires a combination of focus and flexibility, capacity to build trust with a highly diverse group of people and comfort weighing and executing against competing priorities. You must be a strong team player with superb project management skills and the ability to work with multiple stakeholders while displaying smarts, grace, humor, and calm under pressure. This new role will report directly to the CEO and will serve as a key leader for the organization.

Responsibilities:
Organizational Management:
• Build organization-wide systems and processes to ensure successful and consistent delivery of programmatic outcomes.
• Manage work-streams across the organization, ensuring strategic priorities and key deliverables are met on time. Oversee and manage highly prioritized projects related to partnerships, communications, and fundraising.
• Partner with CEO to manage Advance Peace’s Board to high performance, by leading meeting preparation and managing meeting follow up
• Lead effort to develop ongoing and rigorous performance management systems, examining both internal performance as well as external stakeholder perceptions of quality and delivery.

Strategy and Business Planning:
• Support CEO and Board in development and execution of 3-year Strategic Plan. As relevant, leads emerging strategic initiatives from vision through to execution and cross-functional project teams to achieve specific outcomes on behalf of the organization.
• Serve as key member of Leadership Team, providing strategic recommendations to the CEO and Board of Directors related to financial analysis and projects, cost identification and allocation, and organization build-out.
• Define how various departments (i.e. program, finance, etc.) interact to support each other and the organization, ensuring the full integration of all aspects of organizational operations.

Finance, Systems, and Operations:
• Manage budgeting, financial modeling and creation of finance tools at AP’s early-stage, providing financial information to CEO and Board to enhance sound financial decision making and allocation of resources.
• Provide leadership and guidance around all aspects of AP’s systems, internal processes and procedures, technology, and facilities.
• Oversee buildout of finance team and provide oversight of accounting, employee benefits, risk management strategies, legal activities, payroll and regulatory and legal compliance.
• Work with AP team to design and implement technologies and systems to support and enhance the current and future operations of AP.

Growth and Business Development:
• Relationship management and communications with internal and external stakeholders.
• Collaborate in the development of additional programmatic and product offerings, growing the organization’s scope and depth of delivery.
• Support major fundraising efforts, focusing on both national investors and building local capacity in AP cities.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:
• At least 7-10 years of experience in project management, social enterprise, or leadership development strongly preferred.
• Outstanding project management and analytical skills with exceptional attention to details; demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for a diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
• Seasoned problem solver with sophisticated understanding of finance, technology, operations, and systems development and experience overseeing budgeting processes, implementing technology systems, and creating structure around organization processes. Knowledge of non-profit accounting a plus.
• Comfort in a start-up environment and the dexterity to manage multiple tasks effectively with frequent interruptions, and to work productively in a fast paced, rapidly growing organization.
• Ability to assert influence in ensuring deadlines are met and management team stays on track to critical deliverables or administrative timelines
• Demonstrated success at building analytical frameworks that drive the planning and management of organizational change and growth. Experience successfully building and managing teams.
• Excellent leadership skills and ability to serve as a proactive partner to CEO and Board.
• Demonstrated passion for and commitment to Advance Peace’s mission. Knowledge of U.S. criminal justice system.
• Ability to write correspondence to multiple stakeholders; ability to represent CEO in interactions with diverse stakeholders, including client systems, media, investors, etc.
• Proven ability to think both strategically and tactically, ensuring big picture and small-scale assignments performed with excellence
• Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree in Business, Policy, or related sector preferred.
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Advance Peace offers a highly competitive compensation package commensurate with experience and full benefits.

Location
Full-time based in Richmond, CA; expected travel 25-30%
