Communications Fellowship (Paid, Full-time)
 
Progressive Congress seeks a current or recent undergraduate or graduate student to immediately fill a full-time Communications Fellowship to be placed at the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC).
 
The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) consists of one United States Senator and seventy-one members of the United States House of Representatives, and is the largest caucus within the House Democratic Caucus. Established in 1991, the CPC reflects the diversity and strength of the American people, seeks to give voice to the needs and aspirations of all Americans, and builds a more just and humane society.

The Progressive Congress Fellowship is designed for emerging leaders who want to develop their own professional skills in communications and social change through learning from and working within a strong communications operation on Capitol Hill. The position works closely with the CPC Executive Director and Co-Chair Offices, as well as with the Senior staff of Progressive Congress.org to implement a media and messaging strategy that advances both organizational needs and progressive legislative goals of the CPC and fulfills fellowship requirements of Progressive Congress.org including monthly and quarterly reports to be submitted to Progressive Congress.org.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Draft press releases and written statements for the Congressional Progressive Caucus
Manage projects within the CPC online media strategy, including Caucus Web site, Facebook and Twitter account
Work with Progressive Congress.org to connect with progressive organizations from across labor, environmental and social justice movements on collaborative advocacy effort
Edit and distribute online videos for the CPC
Distribute messaging materials to and coordinate work among communications staff for Congressional Progressive Caucus members
Coordinate and manage a weekly communications directors meeting as part of the Progressive Congress.org fellowship requirement
Develop Caucus-wide media relations, including press bookings and interview preparation
Work closely with Progressive Congress.org to organize weekly media briefings for the members of the CPC as part of the Fellowship requirement
Submit monthly and quarterly reports regarding the work undertaken as a Fellow including weekly communications directors meetings
Liaison with Progressive Congress.org in the creation and planning of the Progressive Congress.org Media Outreach Program
 
QUALIFICATIONS:

A strong commitment to progressive values
Excellent writing and critical thinking skills
Ability to produce high-quality materials quickly and professionally, with attention to nuance
Self-starter with ability to work on several simultaneous projects with minimal direct supervision
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and GoogleDocs. Knowledge of social media applications.
Technical expertise highly preferred, especially in HTML/Website design, video and image editing
Knowledge of ethnic media is a plus
 
COMPENSATION:
 
$35,000 per year—the Fellow is a full-time staff member of Progressive Congress despite placement at the CPC. Fellowship includes health insurance benefits. This position begins with a six-month evaluation commitment at first, and a likely extension to one year pending performance review. (Fellows are routinely invited to apply for full-time positions that become available to Progressive Congress staff.)
