Full-Time Director of Finance and Impact Evaluation

Jacaranda Health – Posted by npascual Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya

Job Description

About Us
Jacaranda Health is a fast-growing venture that aims to set a new standard for maternity care in Africa. We are combining business and clinical innovations to create a scalable chain of clinics that provide reproductive health services to poor urban women.

At the core of our model are Jacaranda Maternities positioned near the slums where women can go for respectful obstetric care, safe delivery, and reproductive health services. Jacaranda has received awards for its model, and we are also planning to work as an “innovation laboratory” for new approaches in improving maternal health, from outreach and marketing, to health systems strengthening to low-cost mobile technologies.

We are piloting the model in Nairobi with the aim to expand rapidly. We launched our first maternity hospital in August 2012, and opening two additional maternities this year, tripling the size and scale of our organization. We have won numerous awards and support for our model, from the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, the Health Market Innovations Awards, Maternal Health Task Force, Ashoka Changemakers and Saving Lives at Birth. We are poised for scale and need great people to help us reach our potential.

Job Description
We seek exceptional candidates who want to put their financial skills to work making a global impact in maternal health, and are enthusiastic about a fast-growing African start-up environment on the cutting edge of healthcare and business.

The Finance and Impact Evaluation Director will be responsible for the following:

Manage and oversee financial operations
You would be responsible for overseeing overall financial operations of the organization, including managing Jacaranda’s accounting, auditing and procurement processes as well as improving our financial controls. You will report regularly to the Executive Director on cash flows, budgets, financial statements, as well as grant budgets.

Provide strategic financial guidance
You will perform a key role in evaluating investments for new clinics and scale-up models, for bringing new services to the market, and ensuring that our maternity revenues are growing fast enough to sustained and scale. In that role, you will be responsible for financial modeling, pricing new services, evaluating cost-effectiveness, evaluating impact of strategic decisions on Jacaranda’s business model, and financial sustainability as we grow into a chain of clinics.

Assist with Jacaranda’s financial innovations
The Finance Director would also work closely with the rest of the leadership team in exploring and managing innovative financial projects such as: MamaKiba, a mobile savings program allowing women to save for their pregnancy with their phone, coupled with savings reminders and working through women’s savings groups; developing saving incentives (lottery, rewards); and partnering with MFIs, micro insurance, and government-sponsored voucher programs.

Impact evaluation: develop systems and tools to measure our impact and enhancing how we use data to inform our decisions

As an organization we strongly believe in the importance of data-driven decisions. The Finance and Impact Evaluation Director would be responsible for building systems and tracking metrics needed to evaluate and improve our business and clinical operations and communicate the impact of our work to the global health and business communities. These metrics will range from the areas of health impacts, clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction to marketing, commercial and process metrics.

We have a dynamic cross-cultural team. The Finance and Impact Evaluation Director would be a member of our executive team and interact closely with senior management and frontline staff. S/He would manage a small team of accountants, IT, and data analyst, and would report to our Executive Director.

Nairobi is an incredibly exciting place to work – a bustling economy and a global hotspot for social entrepreneurship and social investment. You will be exposed to a network of entrepreneurs spanning sectors: technology, agriculture, energy and health.
