ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
Founded in 2004, Build Change is a non‐profit social enterprise whose mission is to save lives in earthquakes and hurricanes. Build Change designs disaster-resistant houses and schools, trains homeowners, builders, engineers and government officials to build them, works with governments to develop and implement building standards, partners with the private sector to improve building materials quality and create jobs, and facilitates access to incentive-based capital for reconstruction and retrofitting by partnering with financing institutions and government subsidy programs. Build Change was founded in 2004 and began work in Aceh, Indonesia, after Indian Ocean tsunami, and has since expanded to include programs in China, Haiti, Colombia, Guatemala, Nepal, and the Philippines. Build Change has trained more than 25,000 people on earthquake-resistant design and construction techniques, and has provided technical assistance for more than 48,000 safer homes, impacting an estimated 245,000 people.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
For the position of Director of Fund Development – Institutional Donors, Build Change is seeking an experienced, innovative, outgoing individual with a proven track record of raising funds, and building partnerships and brand recognition for an international non-profit social enterprise. The successful candidate should have documented success in researching, positioning, writing and winning grant and contract proposals for donors such as development agencies (e.g., USAID), development banks (e.g., World Bank), relief agencies (e.g., American Red Cross), and corporate partners. The successful candidate will implement and expand Build Change’s fundraising strategy, with main focus on prevention or pre-disaster mitigation programs, resulting in the development of a portfolio of grants and contracts of at least $3M per year.

This position reports to the CEO, with frequent interaction with Build Change country-level staff.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Secure at least US$1M in grants or contracts in year 1, growing to $3M per year by year 3
• Work with CEO, Board of Directors, and fund development team to develop, diversify and execute Build Change’s fundraising strategy and annual tactical plan, with focus on funding for prevention programs and unrestricted funding.
• Approach and cultivate major groups of donors and partners including but not limited to the following:
o Agencies and development banks: World Bank, ADB, USAID, others
o Foundations
o Private sector corporate partnerships
o Relief agencies: American Red Cross, Global Communities, others
o Subcontractor roles with USAID and others

• Perform grant and award research, cultivation, positioning, proposal writing, and hold meetings for above groups of funders
• Work with and prepare CEO, senior management team, and board members for donor meetings and other fund development events
• Prepare and submit fund development pipeline reports and partnership tracking reports
• Use Salesforce, Constant Contact, and other donor databases and marketing tools
• Oversee development staff to produce appeals, newsletters, success stories, promotional videos, social media, and other fund and partnership development collateral

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum 8 years professional experience in a similar position with demonstrated success in fund and partnership development
• Professional experience in proposal writing for an international non-profit social enterprise or similar private sector business, with proven record of winning grants and contracts and exceeding fundraising or business development goals
• Outstanding, outgoing interpersonal skills, high energy level, and ability to speak persuasively in front of large and small groups
• Competency with social media, donor data management systems and e-newsletters (such as Salesforce, Constant Contact, giving websites)
• Superior, professional and versatile writing, presentation, and communication skills with ability to adapt based on audience
• Ability to work independently, willingness to work evenings and weekends and travel as needed
• Knowledge of and passion for Build Change’s mission
• Understanding of basic engineering and construction principles is a strong plus
• Work experience in Haiti, Latin America, Asia or emerging nations a plus
• Language fluency in Spanish and French strong pluses
• No ego, drama, or pessimism; the successful candidate will be flexible, humble, patient, and have a good sense of humor
