POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Investments is a principal member of the HU investment team, charged with representing the organization in a range of client-facing settings and advancing investment opportunities that fit Humanity United’s overall strategy. This particular Director of Investments will have direct responsibility for managing a portfolio of work related to the prevention of conflict and building peace in Sudan and South Sudan. This work includes implementing and, as necessary, updating the organization’s overall strategy, identifying and screening specific opportunities to further the organization’s strategic goals, conducting due diligence and proposal evaluation, and providing ongoing grants/investments management and support. In addition, the Director of Investments contributes to ongoing organizational and strategy development.
Qualified candidates will have extensive prior experience working in Sudan and / or South Sudan, and be knowledgeable about the broader context of conflict within and between the two countries. Candidates must be comfortable engaging with Sudanese and South Sudanese Government officials, as well as with key interlocutors within the African Union, regional governments, the US Government and the United Nations. The ideal candidate will also have experience working with a range of civil society organizations and INGOs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Investment Process
• Implement HU’s current strategy for Sudan and South Sudan, as well as updating and modifying the strategy as necessary, in light of developments on the ground;
• Actively seek out potential partners with the aim of successfully implementing the above-mentioned vision;
• Conduct thorough due diligence of grants within his/her portfolio, from early analysis and determination of fit, to organizational and financial analysis, monitoring and oversight during the execution phase, and proper completion of close out and learning documentation;
• Have an active network of known partners working on the ground in this region, with the aim of identifying new grant and investment candidates;
• Provide ongoing support to existing grant and investment portfolio members;
• Perform financial analysis of potential grantee organizations and investment
proposals; determine fiscal health of potential grantee organizations;
• Manage deal pipeline, including managing proposal and budget expectations,
deliverables, communication on a month-to-month basis, completion of close out
and learning documentation;
• Monitor closely developments in the region and apply current strategic perspective
to investment activities, and recommend courses of action when events on the
ground warrant intervention from HU;
• Provide strategic advice to the organization on policy and advocacy actions
needed to implement our strategy in the region, and lead advocacy actions when
appropriate;
• Have, maintain, and pursue high-level contacts with relevant regional
governments, the USG, and key international bodies (e.g. the AU and the UN), in
order to successfully advocate for policy change;
• Oversee high-touch communication efforts with a wide range of internal and
external constituencies in a fast-paced environment requiring rapid prioritization
and multitasking;
• Perform other tasks as required.

Organizational Development
• Rapidly iterate and continually refine execution of the Humanity United strategy
• Coordinate external communication efforts with the internal communications team
for consistent messaging
• Development of a thorough breadth and depth of knowledge of key players and
issues in conflict prevention to inform HU strategic development
• Advance internal learning objectives through rigorous analysis and outcome
evaluation
• Manage to results and solutions internally and externally
• Lead and support other projects as required

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:
• 10-plus years professional experience working on issues related to conflict prevention, human rights, international development and/or policy advocacy with a non-profit organization, foundation, government entity, private sector, or inter- governmental organization
• Demonstrated commitment to international development and human rights, and at least two years of field experience in post-conflict countries
• Prior experience working in or on Sudan or South Sudan
• Fluency in English required; knowledge of Arabic is a plus
• MBA/MA in international affairs or public policy, or equivalent experience
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships, influence others, and offer strategic
perspective
• Strong analytical skills, prior experience with investment/grant making preferred
• Strong teamwork and written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work with limited supervision and high levels of initiative
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally
