Frontier Market Scouts Certificate Training and Fellowship ~ Cultivating Talent for Impact Investing and Social Enterprise Management

The Frontier Market Scouts (FMS) at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) is a social enterprise management and impact investment certificate training and fellowship program founded in 2011 that has trained more than 500 professionals since its inception. FMS received a 2013 Cordes Innovation Award from AshokaU.

The FMS training, taking place from January 7 – 18, 2019, provides participants with the knowledge and tools required to work effectively on the ground in the field of impact investment and social enterprise management. FMS instructors are active practitioners in the impact space and work with leading organizations including Omidyar Network, Accion Venture Lab, Village Capital, Invested Development, and Colorado Capital. Through the combination of lectures and actionable co-creative projects, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the ecosystem and frame-work for market-based solutions. Training curriculum topics include:

  • Scaling High-Impact Social Enterprises
  • Designing Innovative Business Models
  • Diligence Process and Decision in Impact Investment
  • Profiling Ventures for Impact Investing
  • Managing Impact Investing Portfolios

The Fellowship Opportunity

The Frontier Market Scouts offers an innovative, unmatched training program in impact investment and social enterprise management. This is followed by a 2-12 months internship in regions with active social entrepreneurship development activities and identified potential partners, including but not limited to: Lima, Nairobi, Mumbai, Guatemala, Colombia, Manila, London, Mexico City, Istanbul, Sao Paolo, Belize, and numerous other locations. Placements are also available in the United States. Since 2011 FMS fellows have worked to grow and improve processes for over 100 social enterprises around the world during field assignments based in such countries as Brazil, India, The Netherlands, Ecuador, Colombia, Vietnam, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, and Lebanon.

After completing the intensive, two-week training, FMS participants have the opportunity to become candidates for fellowship positions with social ventures, accelerator programs, or impact funds in positions such as operations management and financial modeling for periods of up to one year.

Successful candidates will have:

  • The ability to clearly communicate practical skills alignment and genuine passion for market-based solutions to poverty alleviation
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility and openness to learning quickly without direct supervision
  • Past experience living and working in an emerging market or capital weak region
  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas is desirable: financial modeling, branding and communications, logistics and supply chain management.

The Fellowship Candidate Selection Process

The winter 2019 Frontier Market Scouts Program provides an intensive two-week (January 7 – 18, 2019) training session that introduces participants to the world of social impact investing and venture management. Trainings are based in Monterey, California. The training prepares participants for the opportunity to work directly with local entrepreneurs and impact investors during a 2-12 months field program in global hotspots for social entrepreneurship.

FMS has partnered with the Sanghata Global Institute, Village Capital, the Shell Foundation, and Invested Development, among other organizations to provide the human capital needed for the continued development of impact investment and social enterprise as means for poverty alleviation and sustainable development.

Other Terms

  • Training: Leading professionals in the impact investing and social entrepreneurship industry and Middlebury Institute Faculty will provide fellows with necessary training on how to develop and execute a successful project in the social enterprise / impact investment management space. The two-week certificate training costs $4,000 with merit-based partial and full training scholarships available for highly qualified applications.   • Access: Fellows will be provided with access to the Partner’s worldwide network of incubators, additional partners, entrepreneurs and investors.
  • Support: The FMS team will provide professional guidance and support, and connect fellows with local hiring partners. Fellows are responsible for making travel and living arrangements with assistance from local partners and the Center for Social Impact Learning at MIIS.
  • Stipend: Partners will provide a minimum stipend of $250 USD monthly stipend[*] per month for up to twelve months. Additional field program scholarships may be available.
  • Acceptance: The selection of fellows will be jointly made by field partners and the FMS Program, and is based on academic performance, professional experience, language ability, and demonstrated interest in the social enterprise/impact investment space.

Benefits: The FMS Program provides a graduate-level pre-departure training and professional certificate, un-matched experience with industry leaders and projects, and a minimum $250 USD monthly stipend*. Additional funding to offset travel, training, and living costs may be available.

International Applicant Note: The FMS program provides visa support for the duration of the two-week training only. Non-US citizens are not eligible to pursue US-based FMS fellowship positions.
