Organization Profile:

Founded in 1999, BUILD uses entrepreneurship-based, experiential learning to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD’s unique program offers students a four-year entrepreneurship experience designed to reinforce the Common Core, develop 21st Century Skills and motivate student engagement in school. Starting in 9th grade, BUILD students work with their peers and community mentors to develop business ideas, pitch to funders and launch real businesses. As they journey through high school, BUILD provides students with support in navigating the college application process and the opportunity to explore college and career options, while expanding their businesses or opting into community internships.

BUILD will serve approximately 2,000 high school students at programs located in the San Francisco Bay Area; Washington, DC; Boston, MA and New York City in academic year 2016-17, and is launching operations in Los Angeles to serve students in the fall of 2017.

Position Summary:

BUILD is currently seeking a proactive Grants Associate (GA) to research prospects, draft applications, create grant reports and assist in the stewardship of our national corporate and foundation partners. This position is a member of the National Development Team and will report directly to the Associate Vice President of Development. This position will focus on supporting regional grant writing efforts, and will work closely with regional development team members, thereby developing an expert understanding of the local communities in which BUILD operates.

Position Responsibilities:

Grant Writing (85%)

Grant writing – Write and assemble compelling applications for corporate and foundation funding opportunities
Reporting – Write and assist with the preparation of required progress and final reports, including compiling necessary information from program and finance staff, drafting written reports and submitting all reports in a timely manner
Prospect research – Identify new potential corporate and foundation funders through publications, website subscriptions, databases, and other resources, and track information in the database
As directed, liaise between Development, Program and Finance teams to identify funding needs and provide up-to-date language for the organization
Develop an exceptional working understanding of BUILD’s program, data, funding priorities and strategic plans to use in grant submissions and reports
Other duties as assigned
Grants Management and General Administration (15%)

Maintain database to ensure timely submission of letters of inquiry, proposal deadlines and reports
Maintain up-to-date information in the grants toolkit for use by other BUILD development staff
Upon request, provide assistance with additional presentation document creation and editing, grant processing/execution and data management
Work with appropriate team members to coordinate site visits and other funder meetings and events, interact with and respond to questions from funders and participate in relevant discussions and meetings
Additional administrative support as needed
Qualifications:

Qualified candidates should possess excellent writing and computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite), and database management skills. The candidate must be highly organized with the ability to create and implement systems and follow-up processes, able to effectively work under pressure with humor, use independent judgment, and produce a consistently high quality work product within tight time constraints and competing deadlines.

Passionate commitment to BUILD’s mission, vision, and strategic direction
At least 2 years of experience working in a development/fundraising department of a non-profit organization or a similar experience in a sales or program environment with direct customer service responsibilities and supporting key organization personnel
Proven success in crafting and submitting compelling grant LOIs/RFPs, proposals, and reports
Exceptional oral and written communicator
Excellent project and process management skills and attention to detail
Ability to work in partnership with others and to coordinate a working team in the accomplishment of a project; experience in collaborating with remote colleagues desirable
Content knowledge in education, college readiness, and/or workforce development
Ability to thrive effectively in a creative, dynamic, deadline-driven environment with humor and flexibility
Experience with a data management system is required – preferably Raiser’s Edge or Salesforce
Bachelor’s degree required

Travel may be required to other regions and locations in pursuit of national projects
Additional evening and weekend hours may be required to fulfill the duties of this position
