Full-Time Maker Arts Technician and Coordinator

Job Summary: Haverford College seeks to hire a full-time, exempt, fully benefits eligible Maker Arts Technician and Coordinator to help the college envision, develop, and run a new Maker Arts space that will be based within the Visual Culture Arts and Media (VCAM) facility. The position is full time with an initial three-year term and reports to the VCAM Director. This person will maintain all equipment in the space, support curricular activities and develop co-curricular programs, create and teach workshops, coordinating with faculty, student, and IT groups, pioneer new maker technologies, and train student technicians to serve as lab assistants.

Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities: The technician will be expected to provide expert instructional and technical support capable of helping faculty integrate sophisticated media technology into their pedagogy at all levels of the curriculum. This position will also manage 2D, 3D, and design/programming software and hardware within the Maker Arts space, including installing, updating, and troubleshooting applications, and will organize and support co-curricular engagement as well.

The person in this position reports to the VCAM Director; primary duties will include:

• Envisioning, developing, and running the Maker Arts space in coordination with faculty and students;
• Maintaining, purchasing, and updating all equipment and software on a regular basis with input from VCAM Director and IT staff;
• Developing, implementing, and teaching workshops in coordination with courses and skills-based co-curricular activities;
• Laying the groundwork for the development and implementation of summer programming currently still at a conceptual stage;
• Working with faculty to engage existing student groups and community interest in Maker Arts activities to maximize coordination and resource utilization;
• Mentoring enterprising Haverford students, faculty, and staff as they conceive and plan new Maker Arts ventures

Education, Training, & Experience:
• 3-5 years’ experience in a maker lab, hacker space, or equivalent with a degree (BA or above) in related field is required
• Expertise with 3D modeling, sculpting, and design equipment and software (Rhino or Cinema 4D, CAD, ZBrush, Animation, Blender); 2D (Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign et al.); and design/programming (Arduino, Python, XMLL) is required
• Experience using, maintaining and training others on 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters, and other digital fabrication equipment is required
• Experience within a higher education environment is preferred
• Candidates with experience working across disciplines and who can speak to these multiple constituencies are preferred. Knowledge/background necessary to serve as an in-person resource for the community. The space will be interdisciplinary, connecting to and drawing from technology, the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities
• Some experience with other fabrication tools, game design, and DIY environments is preferred

Special Requirements:
• Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, PA Act 153 Child Abuse clearances
• Current Drivers’ License and ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record check
• Programming requirements may necessitate evening and weekend hours

• Sitting (to rest weight on buttocks and back of thighs with legs bent at knees): 6-8 hours
• Crouching/Stooping (to bend upper body forward while fully flexing knees): 6-8 hours Kneeling (to maintain upper body in erect position while resting knees on ground): 3-6 hours
• Climbing (to ascend or descent heights using ladders, scaffolding, stairs, poles, inclined surfaces): Up to three hours
• Twisting (to rotate upper body while feet remain stationary): 3-6 hours
• Driving (operating a motor vehicle, crane, tractor, forklift, etc.): Up to three hours
• Exposure Limitation (i.e., cold water, dust, gas, fumes, extreme temperatures): 6-8 hours
