Full-Time Program Associate

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation – Posted by [email protected] Los Altos, California, United States

Job Description

We are seeking a Program Associate who is organized and enthusiastic to join the Children, Families, and Communities (CFC) Program team.

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation (Foundation) is a family foundation that is guided by the enduring business philosophy and personal values of Lucile and David Packard, who helped found one of the world’s leading technology companies. Their approach to business and community participation has guided our philanthropy for more than 50 years. Today, their children and grandchildren continue to help guide the work of the Foundation. The Foundation makes grants at the local, state, national, and international level.

The Foundation works on the issues their founders cared about most, which are improving the lives of children; enabling the creative pursuit of science; advancing reproductive health; conserving and restoring the earth’s natural systems; and supporting and strengthening an array of local nonprofit organizations

A staff of 120 conducts the day-to-day operations and a Board of Trustees oversees the work of the Foundation. For 2015, the Foundation expects to make grantmaking awards of over $300 million. David and Lucile Packard passed on to the Foundation the following core set of values: integrity; respect for all people; belief in individual leadership; commitment to effectiveness; and the capacity to think big.

Overview of the Children, Families, and Communities Program
Drawing on the inspiration and leadership of Lucile Salter Packard, the Foundation has a strong interest in the health and well-being of children. The CFC Program strives to ensure that all children will have access to health care and quality early learning opportunities so they can be healthy, ready for school, and on track to reach their full potential. The foundations for health and learning are built in the first five years of a child’s life, but many of the adults caring for children do not have the support they need to provide health care and quality early learning opportunities. Educators and formal caregivers need opportunities for training and professional development. Parents and informal caregivers need to understand the importance of and create the conditions for children to be read to, played with, taken to regular checkups with medical professionals, and provide opportunities for them to form quality relationships with adults. We can help children start strong by providing adults with the support they need to help children stay healthy and start learning in the crucial early years of their lives. We work to ensure educators and formal caregivers have access to coaching and professional development, while exploring how to reach parents and informal caregivers with the information and resources that will help children succeed.

Our grantmaking strategies support early learning, children’s health, and after-school and summer enrichment. More specifically:

• Early Learning: Improve the quality of early learning and developmental experiences, in both formal and informal settings, for children in California from birth through age five, by building the skills and knowledge of the adults who care for these children.

• Children’s Health: Ensure strong implementation of the Affordable Care Act that secures health insurance coverage for children and their families, in ways that expand families’ access to high-quality health care, and begin to explore ways to connect the healthy development of children with their early learning experiences.

• After-school and Summer Enrichment: Strengthen California’s commitment, particularly among education leaders, to publicly funded after-school and summer learning programs. We seek to ensure expanded learning programs are fully integrated into the education system and education leaders are aware of the devastating effects of summer learning loss.
