The Campbell Foundation is seeking a talented and experienced Program Director, Agriculture who will be responsible for managing partnerships with the grantees of our Chesapeake Initiative.  This position plays a key role in the implementation of the Agriculture Program in the Bay watershed and in creating common ground between highly diverse stakeholders such as our grantees, business interests, farmers, decision-makers and the community at large.

The Agriculture Program is focused on supporting:

  • The founding and evolution of 360° stakeholder driven, consensus-based, problem-solving groups
  • Projects that leverage emerging consumer preferences and supply chain mechanisms
  • Development of, and trials for promising new technologies and methods that help to support on-farm performance while enabling changes that yield environmental benefits

The Program Director, Chesapeake will report directly to the President and will collaborate with the Directors of other Programs.  This position is based in Annapolis, MD.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the implementation of the strategic initiatives for improving the Chesapeake Bay and advance multi-year objectives of the Campbell Foundation;
  • Build staff capacity to implement strategies that increase the Foundation’s effectiveness as well as the success of grantee organizations;
  • Effectively translate pertinent information to the President in a timely fashion and solicit perspectives and direction regarding important strategic and tactical opportunities;
  • Act as an effective liaison between the President, staff, grantees and other stakeholders;
  • Partner with the President and staff to develop initiatives that advance the Foundation’s mission;
  • Actively develop, engage, evaluate, maintain and report on strategic relationships in partnership with the President;
  • Foster a thoughtful integration between the work of grantees, stakeholders and the Campbell Foundation;
  • Build and maintain a highly motivated and effective Chesapeake Program team;
  • Represent the mission and values of the Campbell Foundation;
  • Establish and effectively communicate and monitor specific, individual and programmatic performance metrics and goals with other Foundation staff;
  • Work with fellow Program Directors to implement, evaluate, and update the strategic plan of the Chesapeake Initiative;
  • Participate with fellow Program Directors in leading the Annapolis, MD team in regular, well-structured meetings;
  • Build capacity in the leadership and organization of the Program grantees;
  • Partner with staff to effectively utilize Foundation Connect to track grants, spending, and outcomes/metrics;
  • Review and evaluate grantee’s financial reports to forecast their capacity;
  • Regularly evaluate talent and capabilities of staff and grantees to ensure that resources and developmental tools are effectively enhancing performance at all levels;
  • Develop operational specifications for all program initiatives, ensuring alignment across staff, including distinct program officer deliverables with clear delivery dates and explicit accountabilities;
  • Prepare timely, candid, actionable reports to the President;
  • Develop and utilize forward-looking models and program assessments to properly evaluate resource allocation across areas of grant making;
  • Ensure that the Program effectively utilizes the Foundation’s database to support efforts to research and track grants, grantee institutions, and their performance relative to the Program’s strategic plan and its metrics;
  • Maintain an awareness of emerging issues, polices, programs, and organizations that may affect the Foundation’s ability to carry out its mission, and propose potential strategic and tactical adjustments to the President when necessary, and
  • Oversee and ensure effective operations of the office administration and of the Executive Assistant.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least 10 years of experience in managing a foundation program or non-profit organizationor a significant department with a mission of sustained environmental focus with multiple, diverse stakeholders, with 5+ years in an executive position such as Vice President or Program Director and managing minimally 3-5 direct reports;
  • Bachelors Degree; Masters degree in relevant field preferred.
  • An engaging leader with exceptional interpersonal and participatory influencing skills to interact with staff, President, conservation community and grantees as well other partners with differing perspectives and interest;
  • Deep interest in diverse points of view; meeting new people; exploring new perspectives and challenging current thinking with the ability to create new common ground;
  • Strong ability to translate strategy into day-to-day planning;
  • Data-based decision-maker who combines analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment, with a focus on learning, sharing knowledge with others, evaluating and achieving objectives with grantees, stakeholders and staff;
  • Highly effective in written and oral communication;
  • Excellent leadership, active listening and facilitation skills;
  • Results-oriented mindset with the ability to be flexible in order to find the right balance between annual objectives, the organization’s long term mission and the diversity of grantees;
  • Very well organized with outstanding project management capabilities;
  • Proven track record in developing, and managing direct reports to improve their productivity and capabilities;
  • Ability to absorb new information quickly and include it in effective implementation adjustments;
  • Excellent computer literacy, both Mac and PC, especially with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.  Familiarity with Foundation Connect or  other grants management databases a plus;
  • An enthusiastic adopter of new technology and innovative tools and comfortable working in a cloud-based, paperless environment;
  • Entrepreneurial with a focus on measurable outcomes and impact, as well as a process for improvement in support of the organizational mission;
  • Participatory in decision-making, proactive and mindful; and
  • Residing or willing to relocate to a residence within a reasonable daily commuting distance from Annapolis, MD.
