Position

NCYL seeks a dynamic and talented senior program associate to lead, implement and support projects of NCYL’s new Education Civil Rights Alliance (ECRA), which is working to achieve education equity by advancing civil rights in education systems around the country. This position will be based out of our DC office and will be supervised by NCYL’s ECRA Director.  The position will also have some office manager responsibilities for NCYL’s six-person DC office.

Current ECRA projects include:

  • Launching state and local campaigns aimed at eliminating illegal education inequity, harassment, and discrimination, including the inequitable distribution of resources, through legal action and other strategies;
  • Building the capacity of state Attorney General offices to protect and strengthen foundational education equity;
  • Developing and disseminating resources to help local stakeholders ensure schools in their communities are safe, supportive, and educate students — see www.edrights.org/resources;
  • Elevating the voice of educators and ensuring their lived experiences in the classroom is informing solutions; and
  • Raising public awareness of the challenges marginalized students experience, and of the potential for legal action.

Essential Functions

Leading and facilitating implementation of Education Civil Rights Alliance projects; adding resources to the ECRA website; postings updates on social media channels (50%);

Providing support to the ECRA Director on other projects/work of the Education Civil Rights Alliance (30%), including:

  • conducting research;
  • scheduling meetings;
  • preparing meeting agendas and materials;
  • taking meeting notes;
  • maintaining records/files for projects;
  • preparing, editing, and formatting of documents for external audiences; and
  • maintaining a database of contacts

Supporting the day-to-day needs of NCYL’s six-person DC office (20%), including:

  • organizing monthly DC staff meetings and occasional staff celebrations;
  • interacting with vendors;
  • interfacing with the building management;
  • providing technology support, including supporting the rollout of new technology systems and working with outside vendors;
  • ordering office supplies; and
  • maintaining the general upkeep of the office

Required Qualifications:

  • Passionate about improving the education outcomes of marginalized children and youth;
  • Ability to lead and implement projects with minimal supervision;
  • Strong analytical and research skills;
  • Experience working in coalitions;
  • Extremely organized with a demonstrated ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and efficiently multi-task and produce a high-end work product in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to work as a team player;
  • Flexibility to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and opportunities;
  • Creative problem solving and ability to stay focused on the big-picture;
  • Skill in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and professional manner, and ability to build relationships with diverse groups of people;
  • Positive attitude maintaining technology systems, and ability to learn technology and software quickly;
  • Ability to engage in some travel; and
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Acrobat, Twitter, and Facebook.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of education civil rights issues and laws;
  • Ability to do simple graphic design / document layout;
  • Experience using SharePoint, Salesforce, WordPress and Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Legal experience and/or JD;
  • Experience as an educator;
  • Proficiency in multiple languages.

 Salary, Benefits, and Location

This is a full-time position. Salary will be between $60,000 – $68,000 annually. NCYL provides health, dental, vision, life, short-term and long-term disability insurance, vacation benefits, sabbatical and an employer contribution to a retirement plan.
