Position Description: The United Teen Equality Center (UTEC) is currently seeking passionate and dedicated applicants for Year 8 of the Youth Empowerment Corps! This position requires a commitment of ten-months beginning in August 2015 through July 2016. Youth Empowerment Corps Members serve full time during their service year at UTEC located in downtown Lowell, MA. UTEC’s mission and promise is to ignite and nurture the ambition of Lowell’s most disconnected young people to trade violence and poverty for social and economic success. Members serve UTECs youth directly in various capacities from case management, teaching, coaching, job training, civic engagement, community service and mentoring. Offering a unique and dynamic opportunity for professional and personal development, Members will cultivate skills from project planning and management to public speaking, relationship building to time management, and so much more. Corps Members will have abundant opportunities to work on individual projects, department tasks, and Corps-wide collaborations. Essential Responsibilities:
• Attend all Corps and staff meetings, trainings, and retreats
• Complete 1,700 hours of service over the course of 47 weeks (approx. 40 hours a week)
• Complete individual, Departmental, and Corps-wide service projects and assignments
• Serve with a team to complete projects in a timely manner
• Complete weekly, monthly, and quarterly evaluation reports
• Bring passion to any team projects and serve effectively with UTEC’s youth
• Ability to promote and foster positive atmosphere with the use of team builders and icebreakers
• Be responsible and reliable; have an ability to multitask
• Be non-judgmental and patient at all times

Marginal Responsibilities:
• Possess a valid Driver’s License
• Transport youth, staff, and/or AmeriCorps in a 15 passenger van
• Be available Monday-Friday, between the hours 9 AM – 6 PM (schedule dependent on department) as well as some nights and weekends; schedules subject to vary throughout the duration of the service year

Qualifications:

• Flexibility and eager to chip in at UTEC wherever and whenever needed
• Passion for community building
• Desire and drive to form positive, meaningful and dynamic relationships with youth and staff alike
• Strong leadership skills
• Availability to serve full-time for a ten month time period (August 2015 – July 2016)
• Comfortable serving in a fast paced, non-profit environment
• Ability to laugh at oneself a must
• AmeriCorps State and National programs are open to US Citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens age 17 and older

Compensation: AmeriCorps Members serve full-time for ten months (47 weeks) and receive a modest living allowance of $12,430 (pre-tax), optional health coverage, and an education award of $5,730 upon completion of service. Childcare is available if eligible and AmeriCorps Members are able to receive forbearance for their qualified student loans. The United Teen Equality Center provides skills training, opportunities to build your resume and work portfolio, career counseling at the end of your service, and resources throughout the year to provide support and guidance.
