POSITION SUMMARY:

Humanity United is seeking an experienced Controller to play a key role in managing the financial and operational reporting functions for the organization. The Controller manages the day-to-day accounting activities of the organization and is responsible for adherence to accounting principles and organization policies and procedures. With full understanding of HU operations, the Controller exercises sound judgment to evaluate financial processes and make recommendations. The candidate must be a team player with high customer service skillset and looking to work in a collaborative environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
• Prepare, analyze, report and distribute financial information and supporting schedules in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes to keep senior leadership abreast of HU’s financial status
• Maintain General Ledger and perform all month-end close activities, including sub-ledger postings, journal entries, GL account and bank account reconciliations
• Maintain internal control and safeguards for costs, program budgets and actual expenditures
• Assist in the annual budgeting, planning process and quarterly forecast
• Perform bi-weekly payroll processing function
• Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
• Manage the preparation and process of the annual audit and year-end tax returns
• Prepare monthly reports measuring performance against operating goals and objectives
• Assist with monthly analysis of actual to budget operating results
• Maintain cash forecast and analysis of cash requirements
• Support presentations to the board committees
• Supervise two accounting staff
• Identify opportunities to improve internal processes
• Provide assistance to CFO as it relates to financial operations

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:

• BA/BS in Accounting with minimum of 8 years experience as Accounting Manager or Controller with General Ledger and Financial Statement responsibility
• CPA/MBA highly preferred
• Prior work in a non-profit or philanthropic environment is highly desirable
• Strong verbal and communication skills
• Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy
• Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable, general ledger, payroll
• Must have solid understanding of GAAP
• Must be proficient in advanced Excel
• Knowledge of Great Plains accounting software and Concur Expense a plus
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite in Mac based platform

• Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation vs. simple reporting
• Strong interpersonal skills, experience in effectively communicating key data
• Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels
• Demonstrated ability to work successfully in multi-faceted, team-oriented environment
• Must be strong at multi-tasking, prioritizing, and have demonstrated expertise in proactively working on projects of wide scope and significant magnitude
• Experience successfully working on projects with international aspects
• Must have experience working with high profile individuals and on high profile projects using appropriate sensitivity and confidentiality
• Must demonstrate high degree of flexibility and adaptability required or indicative of a startup, entrepreneurial or changing work environment
• Must be a creative and independent self-starter, while being a strong team player who acts with diplomacy at all times
• Must be resourceful and, once trained, able to work at a high level with little guidance
• Strong work ethic and impeccable professionalism are key job requirements
