Uncharted’s Values

We take the long view

We use our power to advance equity

We value bravery over brilliance

We bring our whole selves

We lean on our collective strength

The Director of Economic Inequality Initiative is trusted with leading Uncharted’s new Economic Inequality Initiative. We believe economic inequality poses one of the biggest threats to America’s future over the next 25 years and reaches into every dimension of American life. The Economic Inequality Initiative supports changemakers with bold ideas who are trying to write a better future and systems for our country: one where everyone, no matter who they are or the family they were born into has a chance to thrive.

The mission of this role is to successfully design and execute a highly complex inaugural Uncharted program including recruitment, selection, curriculum design and iteration, coaching and mentorship to founders, facilitating (virtual) learning, and measuring and tracking our impact metrics toward future years program design of this multi year initiative. This initiative has already launched and applications are open, so some groundwork has been laid that this Director will continue to execute on, continuously improve and manage in the first year of the program. In subsequent years, this Director will be in charge of end to end design and implementation.

Requirements

Responsibilities

The Director of Economic Inequality Initiative is responsible for the success and impact of Uncharted’s Economic Inequality Initiative. This includes:

  • End to end management of Uncharted’s multi-year Economic Inequality Initiative (EII). Lead curriculum design for EII, including customizing the curriculum after participants have been selected, incorporating DEI into the design, and liaising with our external advisors and program participants on cadence and content and DEI principles.
  • Lead outreach and recruitment for future cohorts of the program.
  • Manage selection of participants, including reviewing applications, leading interviews, conducting due diligence, and liaising with our external selection advisors.
  • Manage the diagnosis process for cohort participants, unearthing their needs and working with the External Relationship Manager to prepare for ecosystem introductions and resources.
  • Deliver curriculum content, and facilitate conversations and peer to peer learning. Build a safe space for participants to engage, share learnings, and gain confidence as they participate in the initiative.
  • Deliver one on one coaching to founders throughout the program, providing value-add strategic advice and mentorship.
  • Work with External Relationships Manager to match experts and mentors to participants in the program.
  • Become a recognizable face and knowledgeable resource for the Economic Inequality Initiative.
  • Manage and maintain back-end systems that track relationships (We use Salesforce – while prior experience in Salesforce isn’t necessary, it would be a bonus!).
  • Manage Program Associates assigned to your program who will assist in participant learning, communication and coordination.
  • Lead, develop, and manage assigned Program Associates to support their future growth within Uncharted.
  • After year one, support outreach and recruitment of all ventures and organizations for future years of the program
  • Work closely with the Managing Director to continue the growth of Uncharted programs with new, exciting ideas, content contributions, network outreach, and team development.
  • Contribute in the orchestration and execution of sophisticated pranks targeted at various members of the team.

Are you the right fit?

  • Mission and culture contributor: First and foremost – you are deeply committed to the mission and vision of Uncharted. You see this role as an opportunity to exercise your passion and align your values and purpose with the values and purpose of an organization attempting to put a dent in the world’s most pressing problems. You are a culture-creator (not just a consumer), and you believe in the power of creating environments where people can belong and thrive.
  • Subject Matter Expertise in Economic Inequality – You bring subject matter expertise around economic inequality in the United States in the form of lived, work, or academic experience. You can speak to compounding effects of economic inequality on different groups especially as relates to wealth gaps (across race, gender, generation, class), can speak to how the status quo is broken, and possess a desire/drive to change it. You are comfortable facilitating conversations on DEI and economic inequality.
  • 7+ years experience working with entrepreneurs and ventures: You have worked for a startup, worked in a startup environment, and/or have worked in supporting startups to grow. You are willing to tackle projects without much guidance/structure. You are the one who builds structure. For example, you have stepped into ambiguous and disorganized situations and build out game-plans and next steps. This is familiar territory for you.
  • 7+ years of program management experience: You have managed sophisticated programs on tight deadlines. You’ve designed, coordinated, executed, and followed-through on programs (of any kind) and you have the outcomes to prove it. From metrics to timelines to communication channels to contingency plans, you’re comfortable and capable being in charge.
  • 7+ years of coaching and mentoring experience: You have the ability and credibility to coach and give advice to participants in the program. You are a constant learner and are forever curious. You find joy in asking the right questions and not taking things at face value. You dig deep, connect the dots and get the “big picture”. This makes you a great sounding board for entrepreneurs, pushing them to clarity when they are confused, helping them to prioritize and brainstorm, and elevating their leadership capabilities.
  • Strong facilitation skills: You have experience with group facilitation, building cohesion and trust in groups. You know how to deliver virtual content to provide a meaningful learning experience and facilitate authentic conversations.
  • Experience Managing Teams: You have experience managing and mentoring teams (in this case it will be Program Managers and/or Program Associates) with the proven ability to provide direction, feedback and clarity to a direct report, and invest in their professional development.
  • Experience in curriculum design: You are comfortable designing curriculum and projects that bring together not only unexpected people but also unexpected approaches. You are not afraid to try new things and bring rigor of thinking to your design.
  • Proven ability to work with detailed data analysis and metrics: You have an acute understanding of impact and are able to report on this in a meaningful way both internally, and to our partners.

FAQs

  • Who will I be working with? You will report to our Managing Director, while working with other team members such as Adrienne RussmanEmily Lutyens and Cristina Lara-Agudelo. If you get further in the process, you will have the opportunity to virtually meet these team members and we will share their User Guides, so you can get a better understanding of what it would be like to work with them.
  • Is your team currently remote? Will this stay remote long term? We are a remote-team with people based in Denver and New York currently. This role can be based anywhere in the US. Our team will gather multiple times per year in person for regular summits.
  • What is Uncharted’s approach to a diverse and equitable workforce? You can read our diversity statement below (which we wholeheartedly stand behind), but we want to take it a step further because creating a diverse and equitable workforce and workplace culture goes beyond a diversity statement in a job description. We’re in the business of building and sharing power and creating equitable access to opportunity, and we believe that journey starts within our proverbial office by building a team, culture, and programming that includes, values, and empowers diverse voices, perspectives, and experiences. We also value transparency and would be remiss if we didn’t also share that, like everyone, we’re on a journey when it comes to our DEI efforts and education. Right now, we can’t boast the kind of staff stats that match the diversity of our country. We’re still learning (we always will be!) and we still have a lot of work to do, but we’re undertaking it wholeheartedly, voluntarily, and proactively because our work, our world, and all of us will benefit from the magic that happens when people from different backgrounds build something together. Have more questions about this? Ask away! Want to push us on something? We welcome it.
  • I have a question that isn’t listed here, what can I do? Feel free to fill out this form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
